Strength for the Week: A Study of Lamentations 3:22-23

As we stand at the beginning of a new week, it is easy to feel the weight of the days ahead. Whether it is the pressure of work, the needs of our families, or the personal burdens we carry, Monday can often feel like a mountain. However, the Word of God provides a steadying truth to anchor our souls before the week even begins.
Let us find our strength today in Lamentations 3:22–23:
“It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

The Supply for the Day
There is a profound comfort in the phrase "new every morning." Great Christian thinkers have often pointed out that God does not give us a lifetime of grace all at once; rather, He provides it in daily portions. Just as the Israelites gathered manna day by day in the wilderness, God provides exactly what we need for the specific trials of a Monday, a Tuesday, and every day following.
As Charles Spurgeon once beautifully noted, we do not have to live on "stale" mercy. We don't have to rely on the strength we had last month or even yesterday. When you opened your eyes this morning, God had already prepared a fresh supply of compassion specifically designed for the challenges you will face over the next twenty-four hours.
Why We Are Not "Consumed"
The writer of Lamentations was speaking in a time of great national and personal distress. Yet, his focus was not on the magnitude of the problem, but on the character of the Provider. He realized that the only reason we aren't overwhelmed by the pressures of life—or "consumed" by our own failures—is because of the Lord’s mercies.
His "compassions fail not." This means God's love isn't like a battery that runs low or a well that goes dry. It is an infinite ocean. Even when we feel exhausted, He is not. Even when our faithfulness wavers, His is "great."
Practical Encouragement for Your Week
As you head into your responsibilities this week, keep these truths close to your heart:
Don't Borrow Tomorrow's Trouble: You may not have the strength for Friday’s problems yet, and that is okay. God has provided the mercy you need for today.
Trust the Fresh Start: If last week was a struggle or if you feel you failed in your walk, remember that today is a "new morning." God’s grace invites you to start fresh right now.
Lean on His Faithfulness: Our feelings change, our energy levels fluctuate, and our circumstances shift. But the faithfulness of God is the one constant you can build your week upon.
Let us go into this week not in our own strength, but resting in the inexhaustible mercies of our Lord.
